Jamie Kelly opened the game’s scoring with a powerplay goal for the Vets 9 minutes into the 1st period .. but 2 quick Simcoe powerplay goals within 23 seconds of each other with just over 5 minutes left in that opening period erased the lead .. after a scoreless 2nd period Simcoe scored an insurance goal 4 minutes into the 3rd period .. Navy Vets Shoot Out Storm For 4-3 Win
Woodstock won their second game of the season on Friday night at Southwood Arena before 273 fans ... putting them above the 500 mark for the first time in over three seasons. Riding on the back of Mike Roefs, who held off the Simcoe Storm during the last 10 minutes of the third period and overtime, with outstanding goaltending. This includes a game saving breakaway stop in OT and stopping the two shoot out tries from the Storm.
Spencer Franklin opened the scoring in the 1st period on the powerplay, scoring just as the penalty expired. Brad Herriott tied the score on Simcoe's own powerplay just under 2 minutes later. Ian Bartlett added his first goal in junior "C" and the Vets with a hard wrist shot into the top corner giving the Vets 2-1 lead after one.
Clayton Chalmers scored two goals in the second, one on a two man down powerplay making the score 3-2 for the Storm after two.
Garrett Whetham scored early in the third to tie the score 3-3 and to make himself the leading scorer for the Vets with 4 points (2G-2A).
Overtime did not settle the game so Chris Babb scored on his first goal attempt in the shootout and Jamie Kelly clinched it when he scored on the Vets third shootout try.
Woodstock is off this weekend not playing again until next Friday against the St. George Dukes.
Roefs Steals Victory on the Road
After the terrible start Friday night the Vets took a 3-0 lead against the Spitfires and hung on for a 5-3 win Saturday night in Aylmer. Woodstock goalie, Mike Roefs was solid in net making 31 saves ensuring the win in which the Navy Vets maintained the lead throughout the game. Scoring their first goals as Vets were Garrett Whetham and Jake Schneider who scored the winning goal with less than 7 minutes to play in the third period. Darcey Butler opened the scoring in the game with his 1st junior goal also and Mackenzie Langford scored his second unassisted goal in as many games taking a 2-0 lead after one period. Chris Babb scored an empty netter to close out the scoring. Curtis Cartmel had 2 assists and Cole Malatches played in his 1st junior game for the Vets.
Navy Vets lose home opener
The Navy Vets 1st goal of the season tied the game at the midway point of the 1st period on a powerplay goal by Jamie Kelly with his 1st junior goal in his 1st junior game … but Paris scored a shorthanded goal just 43 seconds later that seemed to take the air out of the Vets balloon as Paris went on to score 4 straight goals by the end of the 2nd period and never looked back … Mackenzie Langford scored on a breakaway early in the third for the other Vets goal …. The play turned very chippy and nasty in the third when the outcome became obvious … Mike Roefs and Kyle Sephton in his 1st junior game shared the duties between the pipes for the Navy Vets … Ian Bartlett, Spencer Franklin, Alec Durham, Jake Schneider, and Garrett Whetham were also playing in their 1st junior game ... The loss spoiled the enthusiasm that had developed after a successful preseason record of 3-0-1 …
