Robertson rewarded by league

Mired in another long losing streak, Kyle Robertson is one of the reasons why the Woodstock Navy Vets are confident of a brighter future.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a breakout season and was recognized recently as the Niagara District Junior Hockey League West Division Player of the Month for December. Robertson is the first Woodstock player to win the award since goaltender Alex Gegeny was honoured in January 2010. Gegeny is now with the Simcoe Storm.

The Navy Vets only played six games in December, but Robertson compiled six goals and five assists. All of his goals came during a five-game streak as Woodstock was finishing a stretch of six wins in seven games to pull within a few points of Paris for fifth place.

Robertson has been one of the team’s most consistent players this season, registering at least one point in 22 of 30 games. He leads the team with 21 goals and is second behind Derek Cowing with 37 points. As a rookie, Robertson netted five goals and 12 assists in 34 games last season and was named the division’s Most Sportsmanlike Player.

January hasn’t been as kind to Robertson, who has one assist in four games. The Navy Vets have dropped seven straight and will try to snap that streak Friday when they host Aylmer at 7:45 p.m. The fourth-place Spitfires have won three straight, including a 6-1 win over the Navy Vets last weekend. Aylmer won by the same score when it visited Southwood Arena Dec. 23.

Woodstock is perilously close to a second straight last-place finish and needs to win its remaining six games and hope the Paris Mounties collapse in order to finish fifth. Those teams will play twice this weekend, Saturday and Sunday in Paris. The latter game was rescheduled from earlier this season.
